It's a small world, after all

Whew! Recovering from my maiden voyage to Disneyland with my friend Shannon. Spent 14+ hours at Disneyland and affiliated communities and about 8 hours at Universal Studios just up the road in Hollywood. I knew that they had long lines at Disney, but I did not know that they make the lines part of the ride. I.e. they put lots of cool little doodads in the lines for you to look at while you wait for your five minutes on the ride. That made things bearable. The fast pass system also made the lines bearable because most of the fast past lines went very, very quickly (Splash Mountain being the exception.). Funniest moment at D-land: While we were watching the water/light show at the River area that night, some little girl shouted out: "It's Snow White! It's Snow White!" (Or whoever the character was, I forget.) To which her mother (or evil stepmonster, perhaps) replied: "Yes, dreams do come true... for her!" Shannon and I were both stifling giggles at that point. I mean geez, lady, leave your issues at the gate, willya? Universal Studios was a lot more entertaining than I expected (I didn't really know what to expect, actually). The tour was really cool (we got to ride through the wreckage of a 747 from the upcoming War of the Worlds remake). And rides/attractions were fun too. In the Waterworld show the blow stuff up, splash the audience with water and do a lot of really dangerous looking stuff. I hope the actors have a good health care plan. The walk through Universal City was really cool, too. All the stores have these giant, cartoonlike facades to reinforce all the stereotypes people from other countries get about America from Hollywood. Complete sensory overload. Saw the largest stratocaster I've ever seen (4-5 stories high, I'd estimate) at the Hard Rock Cafe there. Here are a couple pictures from the trip. More later.

Happiest Place On Earth?

Well, we'll see. For some reason (I think it's because I took leave of my senses many years ago as a defensive measure), I have decided that a road trip to LA on Memorial Day weekend was a good idea. Should have more on The Mouse in a few days. A friend of mine laughed out loud when she heard that I was going to The Happiest Place on Earth™

My Family Has Grown Larger

Damn you Donald! I was talking with my friend Donald about how torn I was because I wanted something I could practice guitar with while traveling. I was conflicted because the Traveler Speedster will fit in a carry on, so I can take it easily on a plane. On the other hand, while trying out acoustics, I fell in love with the tone of the Seagull M6 Cedar GT. What to do? Donald points out, oh so helpfully, hey you could get both of them. Sooooo, now I have two more guitars. Now where to put them.

Winner!

Of the most fucked up story of the day. Frontline World had a story on tonight about how in Kyrgyzstan it is still customary to kidnap women to make them your bride. i was flabbergasted when I saw this, then sickened. In this day and age I can't believe some of the things that people still do. [article]

Frustrated

I just spent two and half frustrating hours at the music store. I think one thing I need to do is never comparison shop for guitars in a place where there are people who can actually play guitar present. It's really discouraging to listen to people riffing when your own repertoire is so pathetic. And then there's that whole what-is-it-that-I-want-to-get thing. <sigh> Discouraged.

That Was Different

I've been to a few open mic nights, but this is the first one I've ever been to where someone sang a They Might Be Giants song. Actually, the guy sang three TMBG songs ("Experimental Film", "Wearing A Raincoat" and "Birdhouse"). He was really good, too.

Esther's B-Day

Here are a few of the pictures I shot at Esther's birthday party at the Rose Garden last weekend. More are here.

Unleashed

Saw this cool new movie from Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita, The Professional, The Fifth Element, etc) tonight. Jet Li plays Danny, a man who has been raised like an attack dog, by his "Uncle" Bart (played by the always excellent Bob Hoskins),a low life underworld type who uses him to sort out (i.e. beat the bejesus out of people) business problems with people who are late with their debts to him or otherwise on his bad side. In the course of one of these dealings, Danny gets separated from Bart. Danny is taken in by Sam, a blind piano tuner (played by Morgan Freeman) who takes him home and takes care of him. Danny becomes attached to Sam and his step daughter Victoria. A fair amount of the movie involves Sam and Victoria socializing Danny who is completely unused to normal human relationships. Eventually Bart comes around looking for his dog and the inevitable confrontation ensues. Some of the dialog was a bit uneven, but overall this was a great flick. The always awesome Massive Attack provides the soundtrack. The martial arts scenes are impressive as you might expect. One scene in particular had the craziest close quarters combat I have ever seen in my whole life. Check it, I think you gonna en-joy!

Episode III: Thumbs Up

Very, very enjoyable movie. Easily the best of the prequels. The battle scenes in Clone War were great, but the ones in Revenge are even better. There were a few bits of dialog that made me cringe, but overall a very solid film. All the loose ends from the other movies got wrapped up and no one got hurt. Oh. Wait. No, lots of people got hurt. Nice and dark, just the way I likes it. And wookies this time, dammit, not ewoks!

Hey, That's Cool!

Tom Morello (of Audioslave) also plays a Stratocaster. Saw him on the Jimmy Kimmel show tonight (thanks Noelle!). I guess he has some other guitars, too, but he was playing this one tonight.

Placerville Trip

As previously mentioned, I went up to Placerville in the Sierra foothills with my friend Gwen last Sunday. Nice little town. Here are a few pix. There are more here.

Damn You Tower Records and Your Cleverly Designed Endcaps!

I went in to see if they had one (1), one thing (Ghost In the Shell: SAC Set 6). Twenty minutes and $153 later, I left with that plus 4 DVDs and a songbook. This is why I shouldn't be let into music stores.

Some Weekend Shots

A couple shots from the weekend. My friend at a singing gig. Came out ok for low light. Well, after I edited them a bit in Photoshop. <grin> More shots from the weekend later. I've got about as much editing done for tonight as I can get done and I have to get up too too soon. Man I did a lot of stuff this weekend. Morgan's birthday on Friday and Kung Fu Hustle after that. Made a soda cracker pie and hung out with Esther and company for her birthday on Saturday. Saw my friend Gwen in Sacto and went to Placerville for the afternoon. Drove back to SJ to check out Hui and Jonathan in Campbell. Whew! No wonder I was tired today!

Is Shirley Manson Human?

It's hard to tell sometimes. She seems very fey; perhaps she's a changeling. But still quite fetching in a nurse's outfit. Mmmm, nurses outfit. Just saw the video for Bleed Like Me on tv. She looks very otherworldly.

MacLachlan++

Looks like Clan MacLachlan has gotten a little larger. Congratulations to Dave and Jenn!

Kung Fu Hustle

Wow! This movie was great! It's as if Tex Avery or Chuck Jones had conspired to make a kung fu movie. The action is totally over the top and very funny to boot. I think this movie is probably worth it just for the road runner-like chase scenes. Boy am I glad I caught this while it was still in the theater.

"Christian" Telemarketing

Didn't know that MCI supported kiddie porn? Me neither. A friend of mine turned me on to this article about how a "Christian" phone company is getting people to change phone providers. Verizon and AT&T are evidently no better, pushing their pro-gay marriage agenda on their employees. Or so Eugene Mirman found out when he got solicited by said Christian Phone company. Evidently (and I have no idea if this is bullshit or not) an Oklahoma company has determined that there is a market for decent Christian folk who are unaware what is going on at the other phone providers. And if those things don't really happen, well, this is a free market economy now, right? The audio clips are pretty hilarious or frightening, depending on your perspective.

Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodes?

Whoa. Dark.

Reading Comics, Go Away

Read a bunch of books over the weekend, which has kindled a reading jag in me. The guy at Hijinx Comics downtown must have been happy to see me. <grin> And he's got kitties in his store! They were naughtily sleeping on the boxes of comics. Too cute! Now, off to binge on some Books of Magic.

Hitchhiker's Guide

Can't tell if the movie was really bad (this is the consensus view) or if my love of Hitchhiker's Guide has been bled off over the years. I've read the books (multiple times), watched the BBC TV show, and listened to the BBC radio version. I enjoyed the movie, but I think it's mostly because of my love of the books. I found myself reciting a lot of lines (and missing a lot of ones they left out). But I wasn't laughing out loud as much I would have expected. Fun, but not (overly) funny. I think the movie is decent at a two hour encapsulation of the book, but I was hoping for more.

Baby's First Effects Pedal

Grabbed this over at Guitar Showcase the other day. Now I can turn on the overdrive without messing with the amp. Yay! Still have to adjust the volume, though, although I can do that easily enough on the guitar itself.

Now playing: The Thing on the Bass Amp from the album "Aquabats vs. the Floating Eye of Death" by Aquabats

A few selected pictures at sunset from the patio at work. Not entirely what I hoped for, but I was in a hurry.

Back From Coachella

Whew! I am tired! Got back last night from the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio, CA, just down the road from Palm Springs. Basically this consisted of two days of driving and two days of concerts. Had a great time, but it takes a lot out of you. Fortunately, I drove down with Carl and Noelle so I only ended up driving about 5 hours instead of 16. The music I was expecting, but there were also a lot art installations there too, such as the giant baby/robot warfare thing. I was wondering why they had this huge baby and dummies hanging from ropes and various other bits of hardware in this little mini-arena. Later I found out that the hardware was in fact a series of robots that tore the giant baby statue, dummies, police car, etc into bits. They also had stuff that burst into flames, giant van de graf generators, the army of decorated recycling bins (which I unfortunately don't have any pictures of), the drum "things" that people could (and did) beat on. It was hot there, though not so blistering hot as I heard it was last year, only 86 degrees in the shade.
The giant dragonfly was a mister by day and was lit up at night.

Day One:

Started out watching Snow Patrol for a bit. They aren't really my thing, so I went wandering to see the show. It was really hot so I was really happy when I ducked into Sahara (aka The Rave Tent) where the last part of DJ Marky was playing and found that a.) it was relatively cool in there and b.) I could lie down not in the sun. Marky was followed by Tiga. Both sets were respectable and I just lay on the ground and let the beats wash over me. Oh, and did I mention it was loud? I mean, really, really loud. I think this is the only time I ever went in someplace with my earplugs in, only to jam them deeper into my ears to keep the sound out.

UNKLE - Another set in the Rave Tent. Interesting stuff coupled with weird videos featuring this kobold motif (google UNKLE, you'll see what I mean). Shook my ass a lot. Good times.

Weazer - Lovable nerds played a fine set, marred only by the drunk kids slurring the lyrics very loudly behind me and he guy behind me (not directly behind me, thankfully) who decided he didn't need to go to the portapotties to relieve himself. :p

Bauhaus - Wow! Loved this set. Opened with Peter Murphy being lowered over the stage from a cable tied to his feet and he proceeded to sing "Bela Lugosi's Dead", upside down. I realized why all the goth kids showed up at this show in their makeup, boots, lace, and latex in the heat during the day. These guys were really great. Murphy intoned "You can say you were there to see it!" As he left the stage. And now I have. :-)

Chemical Brothers - Caught a little bit of this act, which was pretty good. Heard "Music, Response" among others. Left to go see Zap Mama.

Zap Mama - Heard the singer on a local NPR talk show last week and thought it'd be cool to check out a show some time. Much to my surprise, she was playing at Coachella. Hard to describe her/their work. I guess World Music is the usual description for non-American work. African and latin rhythms. A lot of fun and a good end to the evening.

Day Two:

Jem - Perky singer from the UK. Got in during the middle of her set, when she was singing "Baby I'm Amazed". Like most of the singers from the UK, she seemed pleased to see all the sunshine. It was cooler this day and her music was pleasing to the ear and overall got me in a happy mood, before we moved on...

Kasabian - Woo! I was really looking forward to hearing them and they delivered. High energy set that delivered a lot of tunes from their current album plus some new ones. I didn't know they had two singers, but evidently they do.

The Bravery - Another band I couldn't wait to see. Loved this set. I was way up close to the stage. The lead singer has fabulous stage presence and other than some technical difficulties, I thought they really rocked out. I would definitely go see them again.

Gang of Four - Caught a bit of their set and was a little disappointed. They sounded like a lot of punk bands do in concert.

New Order - Watched these guys for a while. They were all playing real instruments which was a bit of a surprise to me. I think they had, by far, the happiest fans at the show. Chilled out on the field for a while, but left after a bit. I never was a huge New Order fan.

Dresden Dolls - Glad I left to see these guys. I caught the end of "Coin Operated Boy" and arrived just in time for them to play a cover of "War Pigs" which they dedicated to our Fearless Leader. And they did an amazing job, which is even more remarkable when you consider that this group consists of a drummer and a keyboard player. It's a duo that wears harlequin makeup and very little in the way of clothing, so, a little unusual. They did "Girl Anachronism" which made me deliciously happy.

Nine Inch Nails - Yay! Yay! Yay! I finally got to see Trent and the boys again despite the fiasco of last week. Seventy-five minutes of gloom rock! They played a few songs from the new album which sounds really good, plus most of the old favorites. It's always interesting to see 70,000 people singing "I want to fuck you like an animal!" at the top of their lungs. My NIN thirst is satisfied for the time being.

Prodigy - Last set of the show. I took my time getting over there because I heard it was just going to be a DJ set and I was really, really tired at this point. Got into the Rave Tent shortly before they went onstage. And, what's this? This ain't no DJ set! Awesome! Despite the fact that my feet were really aching at this point, I managed to rock out for another hour+.

Completely drained, I met up Carl and Noelle and we somehow made our way back to our hotels. Sore and achy the next day, but made it home without incident the next day.

Some more pictures from the show are here.

Darth Vader Has A Blog

Cry for help? Blog of make believe character? Mildly obsessive fan-fiction? You be the judge.
