RIP Hunter S Thompson

Bad craziness, man! Gonzo journalist Hunter S Thompson is dead at 67 of a self inflicted gunshot wound. :-( Thompson invented the style of jounalism he called Gonzo back in the 60s and 70s. He is probably best known for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which has been made most recently into a film starring Johhny Depp and Benicio del Toro. I became familiar with his work when a good friend of mine gave me a copy of Generation of Swine for Christmas (Or was it a birthday? I forget.). It has widely been described as a suicide, although given his well known penchant for drugs, alcohol, and guns, I wouldn't be surprised if it were unintentional. Vaya con dios, Hunter, you will be missed. [article]

Constantine

The latest comic to be pillaged by Hollywood. Somehow the witty, wise cracking, blonde, English occultist has turned into... Keanu Reeves in LA. Um, ok. All things being equal, it was pretty good for KR movie. Some of the effects were awesome. KR's acting was so so. It's a pretty dark movie, but honestly, they've toned it down from the comics. Still haven't figured out why the people who originally possessed the Spear of Destiny had it, nor why it was where it was. They've jumbled and reworked a lot of the stories which probably won't offend anyone but the Hellblazer purists. And since I appear to be the only one, I guess it's ok. :-)

I, I can't believe I'm doing this...

"Shh... it's ok, just touch it. Hold it in your hand."
"... Oh god, I feel so dirty."

What are they talking about at yesterday's Queen of Wands episode? Check it and see. :-D (work safe)

Late

I remember hearing someplace that psychologists had determined that the best time for armies to attack was around 3 or 4 in the morning because that's when their opponent's morale would be at it's ebb. I can believe that. I found myself thinking some truly crazy shit on the drive home tonight.

Kasabian - Club Foot Free

Apple's iTunes Music Store's free song of the week this week is Club Foot by Kasabian. Freeeeee!

Waiting For the Night

Been waiting for the night to fall
I know that it would save us all
When everything's dark
Keeps us from the stark reality
Been waiting for the night
Now everything is bearable
And there in the still
All that you feel
Is tranquillity

Rain

Got home late last night. When I went out for coffee in the afternoon it was drizzling steadily, but by late at night it was raining steadily. It was nice. A reminder of the home place, I guess. Fell asleep to the sound of rain beating down on the skylights. A little bit of beauty in the desert of my existence.

My friend Annie makes these little ceramic dudes. This one, called "Shoes Too Big?" sold at an art show at the Alameda Artworks on the Alameda in SJ. Way to go Annie!

QotSA

Queens of the Stone Age are touring to promote their upcoming album along with Eagles of Death Metal (a Josh Homme side project). They're playing the Fillmore on 4/16. Tix go on sale Sunday. Anyone who's interested in going should let me know.

Notes From the Underworld

Holy crap. Sixty hours. Last week. Nearly 120 hours in the last 12 days. I had dreams about staff meetings last week. I am really, truly spent. Most of my team appear to range from stressed out to ready to go off the deep end. I'm somewhere in the middle. I don't have enough energy to do much one way or the other. Giggled through a staff meeting last week. People were wondering what was in the soda. Really punchy. Ok. Need guitar therapy. Not working this weekend.

Palpable Stress

So, after a long ass day, I'm almost done with the one thing I wanted to get done at work today. And still it comes. Must go make guitar noise before the stress cracks my tendons. Someday perhaps I'll have something more interesting to write about. Keep it together, keep it together...

Playing with riffs

I could play this all night. Actually I spent a somewhat embarrassing amount of time playing that riff this weekend. I should do something with it some time. When it's a little more polished, of course.

Yawn...

Wow, I slept 11 hours last night, I wonder why. Oh, wait, I worked over 57 hours last week. That could be it. Compensated by getting some hiking in this weekend, watching the super mondo Return of the King, working (dammit!), and noodling on the guitar for hours on end.

Boogyman

Pretty good for a horror movie, at least up until the very end. Yeah, it was easy to MST3K to, but show me a horror movie that isn't. I think they painted themselves into a corner, but it was largely entertaining.

Keep It Together, Keep It Together, Keep It Together...

I am not sure if the fact that the week is half over is a good thing or a bad thing. Mixed blessing. Need sleep now. <shiver>

I'd Hit That

Saw this over at Bloggy Goodness. Someone at McDonald's evidently failed to check in with their urban slang dictionary when they released the ad for a cheeseburger proclaiming: "I'd hit it." Wow. The ad's still up at ESPN. This gives new meaning to their catchphrase: "I'm loving it!" Right up there with the Got Brain ad campaign in NYC. Which I also think I saw over at Noelle's blog.

Education Secretary Chides PBS For Gay Cartoons

Would you please shut up?
Won't you shut up?
Shut up!
I can't believe you won't shut up!
- Apu

No, not that cartoon. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings chose to make her first act as Secretary to chastise PBS for producing an episode of a children's cartoon featuring same sex couples. Her first act on the job. The unreleased episode features a cartoon bunny named Buster who goes on a trip to Vermont where she meets a couple lesbian couples. The couples are not the focus of the episode, which is more about making maple sugar and that sort of thing. Spellings asked PBS (which has chosen to knuckle under and not distribute it to their affiliates) to refund the Dept of Education money they received for the show. I'm glad she's chosen to start her term on such a high note. [article]

Storm Clouds Brewing

Things are getting weird at work. And not the happy kind of weird. And the signs are not pointing to any improvements. The rest of the universe seems threatening as well. W2 has my name messed up. I'm sure the IRS will be understanding. :-p Well, the I Ching is favorable, at least:
