Red Light Cameras ?= Cash Cows

So I blatantly stole this article from Random Musings because it seems like a fairly serious case of The Man using his powers to rip off the common folk. Looks like you can forget about hearsay evidence not being admissable against you or to being able to confront your accusers, these communities have money to make. It's up to $351 a pop in some places in California now. The most interesting thing I found was that while red light running has decreased where the cameras have gone in, rear end accidents have gone up 140% at those same intersections. Seems like robbing Peter to pay Paul to me.

If you rear-end someone, you were following too closely (except in rare cases like swoop-and-squat). Doesn't mean that there's no problem with the red-light cameras, but drivers' tendency to assume the person ahead will continue through the yellow light shouldn't be a factor in the decision of how red light violations are prosecuted.

Now, what they need to get is a method for photographing the car *and* the light in the same picture, so you can see whether they made it all the way through the intersection before the light turned... I assume the current system catches the car and assumes you trust that the photos are only captured when there's been a violation.
